MOU Signing between MFOR, MLPID and Nei Baneawa CS
The Ministry of Line and Phoenix Islands Development (MLPID), in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), proudly announces the establishment of the Nei Baneawa Cooperative Society (CS)—a transformative initiative aimed at advancing value-added marine production and fostering women-led enterprise on Kiritimati Island.
Nei Baneawa CS is composed of representatives from various church women’s groups across the island, united in their commitment to producing and marketing a diverse range of marine-based products. These include tuna jerky, smoked milkfish, seaweed ice cream, jams, and other innovative offerings that blend local tradition with commercial potential.
Under the terms of the agreement, the MFOR will provide training and technical support during the initial business setup. The MLPID will oversee monitoring, evaluation, and equipment maintenance. Nei Baneawa CS will take the lead in ensuring long-term sustainability, managing marketing and promotion, and maintaining financial reporting.
The launch of Nei Baneawa CS is expected to generate a wide range of positive outcomes for Kiritimati Island, including enhanced local value addition, job creation, women’s empowerment, community-based sustainability, and the growth of microenterprises. This initiative marks a significant step toward inclusive development and climate-resilient livelihoods, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to innovation, equity, and grassroots participation.
